When asked in an interview with CCM Magazine why the title “Zion” was chosen, Joel Houston said: “From the outset, I felt like this was going to be a project that spoke simply and decisively of the story of God…of the sense of purpose and mission that comes from realizing where we fit in the picture. I’m convinced that we are not only redeemed, but we are redeemed and called into the story of God with a specific plan and purpose… This is ZION; the city of God, the people of God… allowing the Spirit to breathe His eternal and unshakeable kingdom in and through us as we simply trust and love Him. ….”
Those among us who are familiar with the usual “United” pop/rock worship style, may find this to be a refreshing change as it explores the inclusion of more lyrical and ballad-ish elements, though the delivery on the music and arrangement still bears the same impeccability. Noteworthy is the intention of this album to take the listener on a journey in their experience of God, from salvation to working out of their faith as they fix their gaze on the Saviour. One of my personal favourites is ‘Oceans”, with lyrics that inspired me deeply:
Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders, Let me walk upon the waters Wherever You would call me, Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander And my faith will be made stronger In the presence of my Saviour.
